Name numerology: letter chart and soul number calculation
Name numerology uses letters rather than a birth date. This guide demonstrates one repeating A–Z to 1–9 table and states the spelling rules used in its examples.
The letter-to-number chart

Assign 1–9 to A–I and restart at 1 for J. In these examples, uppercase and lowercase letters have the same value, and spaces and hyphens have no value. Decide which parts and version of the name to include before calculating.
Calculate a name by hand
- Choose one spelling to use. Our short example is AI.
- Look up A=1 and I=9 in the table.
- Add 1+9=10, then reduce 1+0=1.
- Record the spelling and parts of the name included so the result can be reproduced.
This is a manual calculation guide. The automatic form on this site accepts birth dates and does not calculate name numbers.
Full-name, soul and personality numbers

This example treats Y as a consonant. Another method may handle Y or vowels differently. Some guides use soul number for a date-derived figure, so check the input before comparing labels.
Why spelling can change a result
SHI gives S1+H8+I9=18→9, while SI gives S1+I9=10→1. Different romanizations of a Japanese sound can therefore produce different totals. Keep the spelling fixed before calculating so comparisons use a stated rule.
- Choose the spelling in advance.
- Record whether the surname, given name and middle names are included.
- When comparing a changed name, keep track of what changed.
- Read the name total separately from the birth date life path.
